Stone Mountain State Park straddles the Wilkes and Alleghany county lines near the town of Traphill with more than 13,500 acres surrounding a 600-foot granite dome. The Stone Mountain Loop Trail Improvements project is currently in the design phase. The existing trail leads visitors to the top of Stone Mountain, byStone Mountain Falls, and to the historic Hutchinson Homestead. When completed, a new trailhead and parking area will be provided, approximately 1,600 feet of trail will be relocated, and approximately 4 miles of trail will be rehabilitated including the construction of 4 pedestrian bridges.
